"Once I Had a Friend"

Once I Had a Friend.

As I look at my photo (above), I ask myself, “Am I Praying? Am I Sleeping? Or, Am I Just Reflecting?”. Maybe I am doing all three. As I advance toward my 80th year, life becomes anticipation and reflection.

It is with sadness that I recognize my little dog of 14 years, Missy, is close to a final farewell. I am filled with happy memories of her beautiful life, and know I will soon miss her.

I also look forward to many happy years with my newest pal, Rosie, my 3-year-old chihuahua who seems to think my neck is a perfect perch for her.

I am reminded of verse I wrote for my boyhood friend, Chock, whom I shared a final meal with on his death bed at the old Veterans Hospital in Little Rock many years ago. In a reflective mood, I share it with you.

Once I Had a Friend

Once I had a friend, and what a friend was he.

He made me laugh, and made me smile,

When we were only three.

Now I am a man, and many years I see.

But still it is fun to remember the one

who filled my heart with glee:

In my heart I will always be three.

“HAVE I DONE A GOOD JOB?"

Have I Done A Good Job? I ask myself this question every day. One of my social media sites says I have over 5,000 followers, but I really do not know why.

I am grateful to have reached my 79th birthday, and I am grateful I still have a clear mind, and plenty of creative energy.

This morning, I heard a person being interviewed in a televised hearing flaunt the fact that they had been in public service for over 30 years. I immediately wondered, “Did that person do a good job – one that benefited and enriched others?".

Such is my goal in life. My hope is that others will benefit for my having been here.
